Welcome to VUSD! This registration process is designed for students who are new to our district to begin attending now.

Enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year opened on March 3rd, 2025 and it is continuous.

Age eligibilities:

Kindergarten: Birthdate between 09/02/2019-09/01/2020.

Transitional Kindergarten: Birthdate between 09/02/2020-09/01/2021.*

*Students who turn 4 years old after the September 1 cutoff date are encouraged to enroll in preschool programs.

For students who will enroll into VUSD for the first time, your application will be processed after registration is finalized.

Applications submitted before March 15, 2025, receive early consideration.

REQUESTS TO VISTA VISIONS ACADEMY:

Students in grades 6–12 who are interested in Vista Visions Academy must meet with their school counselor to receive a referral.

*The Carlsbad Unified School District is no longer accepting incoming interdistrict transfer agreements As a result, VUSD cannot grant new interdistrict transfer permits. Carlsbad USD has their own process for employees. Employees need to connect with their Instructional Services department via email: transfers@carlsbadusd.net.

This application is for students residing in VUSD boundaries and requesting a transfer to another non-magnet VUSD school for the upcoming school year that begins in August 2026.

What school am I zoned for?

Is my child old enough for Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten?

As a result of legislation passed in July of 2021,

Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten Enrollment for 2025–26 [EC 48000(c)(G)]:

Kindergarten: Children who turn 5 years old on or before September 1, 2025 (birthdays from 09/02/2019 to 09/01/2020) can start Kindergarten in the 2025–26 school year.
Transitional Kindergarten (TK): Children who turn 4 years old on or before September 1, 2025 (birthdays from 09/02/2020 to 09/01/2021) can start TK.

Already in TK at VUSD?
If your child is already in TK in VUSD, you don’t need to register again. Just complete the data confirmation in July.

How long is the transfer process?

For applications for the 2025-2026 school year, allow 1-2 months to receive a notice regarding the results of the request. For students who will enroll into TK and Kinder for the first time, you will be notified after March, as enrollment begins then.

If your student receives Special Education services, allow a minimum of four weeks as we have our Special Education department review the IEP.

Note for INTER transfers: We do not send notices for transfers out of the district. The response will come from the desired district, and we do not have information on their processing times.

How will I know if my transfer has been approved or denied?

Do I need to resubmit an interdistrict transfer request every year?

Can I be guaranteed admission to the school I want my child to go to?

Transfers can only be approved by Student Services once available space has been verified by school staff.

During the month of July, schools are closed and Student Services cannot approve transfers until school staff is available to verify space availability.

Transfers for students with IEPs can only be approved once the Special Education Department has verified that there is space available in a program that can provide services aligned to the offer of FAPE.

Admission to Magnet Schools is only available through the annual Magnet School lottery process.

Transfer requests from students with poor behavioral or attendance histories may be denied.
